Does this Mac still belong to someone else?
Company laptops are often sold while still enrolled in their employer's device management. Whoever holds that enrolment can lock or erase the machine after you own it, and only they can release it. One command rules it out.
Do all of it in one step ›
One command checks Activation Lock, MDM, DEP, battery health and drive health together, reads the answers for you, and confirms the output really came from the Mac in front of you. It needs no password.
Step one
Run this in Terminal on the seller's Mac
profiles status -type enrollmentOpen Terminal with ⌘Space, type “terminal”, paste. It does not ask for a password — anything that does is not this command, and nothing leaves the machine.
Step two
Paste what it prints back
Waiting
Nothing pasted yet
Paste everything the command printed, including the lines that look like noise. Reading the whole output is what stops a half-answer being graded as a pass.
Step three
Watch them sign out of iCloud
If they say they forgot the password
End the meeting. A Mac nobody can sign out of is Activation Locked the moment it is erased, and Apple will only release it for the original owner with proof of purchase. It is worth its weight in aluminium and nothing more. This is the single most common way people lose money on a second-hand Mac.
Once all three are clear, go find what’s actually worth money.
